Virtuosity – aka, why Coach Bob is such a jackass. “Virtuosity” has historically been used to describe enormously talented, technically perfect musicians. A “virtuoso” is a person who possess virtuosity. Duh. Greg Glassman, founder of CrossFit, Inc. used virtuosity to describe a CrossFitter’s dedication for perfection. Why do we lift heavy? To get stronger, right? Sure, but why does lifting heavy make us stronger? It’s way more than the tearing down and building up of muscle. There is an acute hormonal response (neuroendocrine response) to heavy lifting.
Anyone who knows me knows I have a huge problem with CrossFit trainers who call themselves “coaches”…. I reserve “coach” for someone who cares about their athletes enough to program smart, sensible and safe workouts on a daily basis.
