Steelers claim Jake Rodgers off waivers from Texans

The Steelers claimed offensive tackle Jake Rodgers off waivers Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Houston waived him Tuesday.

Rodgers, 25, signed with the Texans’ practice squad on December 21. Houston signed him to a reserve/futures contract after the season.

He has never played in a regular-season game.

Rather than trading back and then reaching for a QB in the first round (if it hadn’t been Carr, it would have been the meek-armed Teddy Bridgewater or—gulp—Johnny Manziel) McKenzie let things shake out and took the last one standing.

It’d be interesting to find out what McKenzie would have done if he thought Carr would not be available at 36; no other QB came off the board until 62 (Carr’s fellow Bay Area franchise guy, Jimmy Garoppolo).

But now we’ve drifted into that fruitless woulda/coulda/shoulda territory—probably because there was nothing to say after this blurb’s first sentence: A Defensive Player of the Year, a franchise QB, a Pro Bowl caliber guard, a fan-favorite nose tackle and some decent depth at cornerback.

With 53% of the vote, Gonzalez beat out Ohio State Rep. Christina Hagan and physician Michael Grusenmeyer in the Republican race to replace Rep. Jim Renacci, who isn’t seeking re-election.

The 33-year-old Gonzalez, who began his bid to run for Congress just nine months ago, received support from his former teammate Peyton Manning and Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam.

Our goal has been to authentically represent our shared values while articulating our vision for the future of Northeast Ohio and our great country, Gonzalez wrote in a statement posted to social media following his win. “As we look forward to the November election and a new challenge, we will continue to double down on this same strategy.”

Gonzalez had his NFL career cut short due to knee injuries. In five seasons, he recorded 99 receptions for 1,307 yards and seven touchdowns.

Giants set to host quarterback prospects in coming days

The draft is drawing closer and the draft’s top quarterbacks are making the rounds with teams in the market for an addition at the position.

Ligotti says he’s the victim of identity theft. In 2013, he wrote a letter complaining to Florida’s Department of Children and Families, the state agency that regulates medical care at substance abuse treatment facilities, notifying the state that somebody had stolen the ID number he uses to authorize drug treatment.

Ligotti is the target of an active FBI investigation, according to a law enforcement source and a second source, both of whom spoke only on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to do so publicly.

Attempts to reach the local FBI agents handling the case were unsuccessful. Ligotti’s attorney would neither confirm nor deny that the FBI is investigating her client.

He could undergo a second surgery to plate the break again, which would cause him to miss spring workouts but would still have him back by the start of training camp in the summer.

The 24-year-old first suffered the broken right forearm in Week 16 of the 2017 season, prematurely ending his season.

Collins returned Monday for the beginning of organized team activities and told reporters that he is back to normal.

“My arm is doing great,” he said, per the team’s official site. “…Everything is back to 100 percent.”

Unfortunately, it appears he is still not completely healed. Garafolo reported a decision has not been made on surgery, but it “sounds very possible.”

When healthy, Collins is one of the best in the league at his position. Even while missing the final game of the year, the safety’s 104 tackles last season was a team high after leading the way with 125 tackles the year before.la_kings_014
