Few players have mastered the art of saying nothing like Brady.

What we have come to understand since is that the story was accurate, or at least mostly so. Wickersham got it right.

When sportscaster Jim Gray this week asked Brady if he felt appreciated by his bosses, Brady gave, for one of the first times ever, a completely transparent response. That wasn’t by accident.

This was the first photo that confirmed Shazier was in a wheelchair. His family and the team have kept details about Shazier’s condition close to the vest to protect his privacy as he recovers.

He visited his teammates at practice for the first time before the Steelers’ divisional matchup against the Jaguars, bringing an emotional lift as the team prepared for the postseason. Cameron Heyward told NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala that Shazier said he has good days and bad days. But the days he’s able to spend around his teammates are always good days.

Shazier’s father, Vernon, said that Ryan regained feeling in his legs.

He’s much better, the elder Shazier told Pittsburgh’s WPXI-TV, but we’ve agreed to keep his progress private until he’s ready to share where he’s at.

A trifecta of episodes that feed public cynicism toward Washington

Above all, President Trump promised that he would change Washington. The promises he made were extravagant, but they resonated in 2016 because they spoke to public perceptions that the political system isn’t working the way it should.

Three moments in a week otherwise dominated by foreign policy focused fresh attention on those shortcomings — a comment by Mick Mulvaney, the director of the Office of Management and Budget; the congressional testimony of Scott Pruitt, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency; and the controversy over the nomination of White House physician Ronny L. Jackson to head the Department of Veterans Affairs. Each in its own way feeds the public’s cynicism.tigers_002-115x115

Denzel Ward (hip) slated to miss Saturday’s practice

Cleveland Browns rookie defensive back Denzel Ward is expected to miss Saturday’s rookie minicamp practice due to a hip injury.

Ward, who exited Friday’s practice early after suffering the injury, is being held out for precautionary reasons, according to Browns team reporter Andrew Gribble.

I am always going to be cautious with our guys, Browns head coach Hue Jackson said per the team’s official website. If I think that they have a little nick or something right now. I do not think being out here and having a guy if there is anything that we feel that might hurt a guy, I am going to make sure that I take him out. He did some good things, just watching him run around, too. We will see where he is tomorrow and go from there.

Ward was selected No. 4 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft last week. The Ohio State cover man ranked as Daniel Jeremiah’s fourth-best prospect.

But of course, Rothman is banking on Witten, paired with veteran play-by-play announcer Joe Tessitore, to develop into a star in his own right.

This is not a mere coincidence. Even with their Super Bowl drought spanning 22 years, the Cowboys have remained the NFL’s top TV draw and well, longest-running soap opera. The intense coverage of the team helped Witten and Romo become comfortable in expressing themselves publicly. Yet the high amount of national TV games (the Cowboys always max out, which means six regular-season games this year, excluding possible games that are flexed to NBC’s Sunday Night Football), also brought another type of exposure as Dallas’ star players repeatedly are tapped to participate in network production meetings a day or two before the game, where strategy and team issues are typically discussed in detail.

It developed that Victor Espinoza still had no Derby mount. When Ruis offered him Bolt d’Oro, a fellow jockey told Espinoza, Maybe you should wait. You’re taking the mount that finished second in the Santa Anta Derby.

No, I wasn’t second, Espinoza said. The horse was.

Redskins Release Orlando Franklin

Following his departure from San Diego, Orlando Franklin has not been able to re-establish his career. The Redskins made the decision to release the veteran guard on Thursday.

A former six-year starter with the Broncos and Chargers, Franklin played in one regular-season game with the Redskins last season. Washington signed Franklin in late October of last year but waived him shortly after. However, the Redskins reacquired him in mid-January via reserve/futures contract.

He’ll now return to free agency.

Without access to Pittsburgh’s practices or the coaching staff’s evaluations, it’s impossible to gauge Dobbs’ progress. What we do know, however, is that he was overwhelmed in preseason action last summer and the presence of Rudolph places his roster spot in jeopardy.

Gleaning clues from general managers is a fruitless exercise, almost as fruitless as guessing who’s picking whom. But Quinn uses the word “dependability” a lot when discussing players, and the Lions have fielded the least-dependable running game in the league. Big and burly may not be the most exciting path, but until the Lions get it right, that’s where they should head.

Despite the unpredictability, more money was wagered on the first leg of the Triple Crown than ever before last year. Not long after Always Dreaming emerged victorious in the 143rd renewal of the Run for the Roses, the Churchill Downs track reported that wagering from all sources on the Kentucky Derby was $139.2 million.

With a wide-open race predicted Saturday, when the 144th running of the Derby takes place at Churchill Downs, bettors will be looking for any edge possible to handicap thoroughbred racing’s marquee event.

Ryan certainly is more accomplished than either Cousins or Garoppolo. He’s a four-time Pro Bowl selection and the 2016 MVP. That same season, he took the Falcons to the Super Bowl, and they jumped out to a commanding lead but collapsed in the second half.

Ryan, who owns a 95-63 regular-season record and 4-6 playoff mark, now faces the task of leading his team back to such heights and beyond.

It’ll be interesting to see how long Ryan remains as the highest paid quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is due a contract extension from the Packers, so it’s foreseeable that his deal will top Ryan’s.

What could have been: The Browns could have drafted Donovan McNabb with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft instead of Tim Couch.giants_150

Seahawks Release Cliff Avril

The Seahawks announced they have released Cliff Avril with a failed physical designation. Avril lost half of the 2017 season to a back injury which reportedly could keep him from returning to the field.

Then again, two Pro Football Hall of Fame QBs, Terry Bradshaw and Jim Kelly, didn’t score much higher (15) than Jackson did. Plus, Jackson admits he can’t catch anything more than a shotgun snap. And just to deter any teams that did envision moving him to receiver, Jackson refused to run the 40-yard dash for NFL scouts. He did say the best time he ever logged was 4.34 seconds — and that was while dealing with a bout of turf toe.

As for any on-field passing flaws that need correcting, Jackson spent extensive pre-draft time with his quarterbacks coach Joshua Harris in South Florida doing “figure-eight” drills and “a lot of throwing outside the pocket” trying to improve his mechanics.

“They say I can’t throw — my elbow stays dropped and stuff like that — and I had a narrow base coming out of college,” Jackson said. “I’ve been working on that a lot and keeping my legs shoulder-width apart when I’m throwing, stepping up in the pocket or just getting out of it.”

Ex-Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik says the work won’t stop there in the NFL.

The one position of need for the Jaguars happens to present a few players who should be available late in the first round of the draft. The player Jacksonville should be looking at most is Vander Esch. The former Broncos linebacker is hailed as one of the top prospects at his position, and rightly so. For a linebacker, his size-speed combination (6-4, 254 pounds, 4.65 40-yard dash) is otherworldly. His quickness and awareness will be an asset to an NFL defense.

Another route the Jaguars could go is tight end, a position at which they should have their pick of the litter and go with Mike Gesicki out of Penn State. Gesicki is another player whose athleticism is off the charts. He’s the kind of pass-catching tight end most teams dream of having; a player who can create matchup nightmares all over the field. His blocking needs work, but as far as a being a weapon goes, he has it covered and then some.

Brothers were selected in the same opening round for the first time: Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds to Buffalo and older sibling Terrell, a Hokies defensive back, to Pittsburgh. The Steelers’ pick was announced by linebacker Ryan Shazier, who suffered a severe back injury last season and underwent surgery on Dec. 6. Shazier limped slowly on stage with help, drawing loud applause from the audience.nike_jets_1635

One scout said we might be missing the forest for the trees.

On the field, Rosen can get lost in trying to be a hero. He tries to make throws that are late, which results in interceptions or passes batted down at the line of scrimmage—both of which are concerning. He’s also not the athlete Mayfield, Allen or Darnold are in terms of pocket mobility.

Injuries have been an issue for Rosen. As a freshman, he stayed off the injury report, but as a sophomore, he played in just six games before a shoulder injury that required minor surgery shut him down. Coming back as a junior in 2017, Rosen missed two games after suffering two concussions. Those issues, more than any perceived character problems, might precipitate a draft-night drop.

Bears fortunate to be sitting out the 2018 QB dance fever More It’s not easy to feel truly sorry for higher-ups with NFL teams, if for no other reason than the salaries that come with jobs that a whole lot of people would pay to do. But along with the escalating interest and buzz developing in the final run-up to the 2018 draft comes an inevitable and understandably rising level of tension, particularly with teams whose mission statement includes line in boldface type: Find a quarterback – now.

A supreme athlete with outstanding ball skills, he is unmatched in this class in terms of his ability to stay in a receiver’s hip pocket. A lack of ideal size might be his only notable shortcoming, as bigger receivers could prove challenging in press coverage. Projected: potential top 10

2. Josh Jackson, Iowa (6-0, 196): In his first year as a starter, he established himself as a dominant defensive back with a Football Bowl Subdivision high of eight interceptions. Jackson’s rare ball skills and aggressive mindset could make quarterbacks hesitate when deciding whether to throw his way.

3. Jaire Alexander, Louisville (5-10, 196): Something of a forgotten man in 2017 after missing about half the season with knee and hand injuries, he put himself squarely back into the conversation of the draft’s top corners with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash at the combine and a smooth run in position drills.dolphins_085

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Houston Rockets LIVE SCORE UPDATES Game 1

The Minnesota Timberwolves meet the  Houston Rockets in Game 1 of a best-of-seven  Western Conference NBA Playoff series on Sunday, April 15, 2018 (4/15/18) at Toyota Center in Houston Texas.

We’ll have up-to-the-minute scoring and stats here throughout the game. Check the scoreboard above and click on the stats link.

So far the trade for Chris Paul to give the Houston Rockets another superstar to help James Harden has worked famously.

Their work in the regular season led the Rockets to a franchise-record 65 wins, their first No. 1 seed and sixth straight playoff appearance. They are looking to win the title for the first time capturing back-to-back championships in 1994-95.

For the 32-year-old Paul, it’s a chance for him to finally shake off years off playoff woes after making nine playoff trips without advancing past the second round. But if he is haunted by the ghosts of playoffs past, he wouldn’t acknowledge it and was dismissive when asked if he thought this was his best chance to win it all.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t think about all that.”

What he and the Rockets do know is that they’re facing a talented team in the eighth-seeded Timberwolves, who had to win their last regular-season game to get into the postseason. They ended the NBA’s longest active playoff drought with their berth, putting them back in the postseason for the first time since 2004 when they lost to the Lakers in the Western Conference finals.

Flemington native and Hunterdon Central Regional High School product Jason Cabinda was tasked with defending Barkley every day in practice as a middle linebacker, and says that the multitude of ways that Barkley can beat a defense is what sets him apart from other backs.

“It’s just how versatile he is,” Cabinda told NJ Advance Media. “To me, he’s like a scat-back in a big-back’s body. That’s really the best way to put it.”dolphins_116

Daryl Worley arrested, allegedly found passed out in vehicle

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Daryl Worley was arrested Sunday morning after he was allegedly found passed out inside a vehicle blocking a highway, according to NFL Network.

The Eagles confirmed Worley’s arrest and said they were “in the process of gathering more information.”

The Lions have vowed to field a more legitimate running game in 2018. That should also mean they’re thinking about another offensive line upgrade with this pick, but it would not be shocking if Guice were to be selected this high. He would allow Detroit to officially give up on Ameer Abdullah and would be the workhorse ahead of new veteran backup LeGarrette Blount and pass-catching Theo Riddick.

The Bengals last year paid the price after letting both Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeiter walk in free agency. The offensive line needs to be addressed further after the addition of Cordy Glenn for left tackle. Williams is viewed more as an inside blocker and could start right away at either guard spot.

Rapoport reported that Worley was passed out inside a vehicle blocking an intersection. Law enforcement administered a taser on Worley and recovered a gun at the scene.

Garafolo added the incident occurred near Philadelphia’s team facility.

Worley had not played a snap for the Eagles . The former Carolina Panthers cornerback was traded to Philadelphia this offseason in exchange for receiver Torrey Smith .

The third-year corner started 25 of 31 games played in Carolina, recording 150 tackles, three interceptions and two sacks.

With the Saints and Falcons in the division, the Bucs need to keep their secondary a strength. Ward is just as talented as former Ohio State cornerback Marshon Lattimore, and Tampa Bay with him could make huge strides as a defense.dolphins_014

Corey Grant signs tender with Jaguars

The Jaguars have secured running back Corey Grant‘s return for the 2018 season.

That return may not have been in doubt once they used a second-round restricted free agent tender on Grant earlier this month. That would have required any team interested in signing Grant to send a second-round pick to Jacksonville in addition to getting him to agree to a contract that the Jaguars wouldn’t match.

There is Jay Ajayi, who appears to be the starter, as well as Kenyan Drake, the Dolphins’ third round draft pick, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue. But for god’s sake, people, it’s 2017 and we’re still dealing with these guys who are a blight on the game. That also meant carving out two huge stops on Pelicans star, who scored 50 points but only two the final two minutes of the game when New Orleans needed the buckets most. His career here was a little bit up and down, Keeshan told the Guardian.

Foster was charged Thursday with felony domestic violence after being accused of dragging his girlfriend and punching her in the head, leaving her with a ruptured eardrum, authorities said.

Prosecutors said the 24-year-old Foster attacked his girlfriend in February at their Los Gatos home, leaving her bruised and with an injured eardrum.

The 28-year-old woman told responding officers that Foster dragged her by her hair, physically threw her out of the house, and punched her in the head eight to 10 times.

Foster was also charged with felony possession of an assault weapon and misdemeanor possession of a high-capacity magazine after officers found a Sig Sauer 516 short-barreled rifle in his home while investigating his girlfriend’s domestic violence report.

The Jets’ move to No. 3 cost them a lot, so let’s hope they feel good about the quarterback they want to get. Rosen proved at the Combine he can be the face of a big-market franchise to go along with his immense potential as a pocket passer.seahawks_037

Bruce Arians: Cardinals should take Lamar Jackson at No. 15 overall

Bruce Arians couldn’t wait to wolf down a quick breakfast, shake some hands and pose for some pictures, and then hit the golf course Saturday morning.

The former Cardinals head coach was about to play in his own charity tournament, after all, the fifth annual Arizona Celebrity Golf Classic benefiting the Arians Family Foundation.

“This is the first time I’ve played in it in, gosh, three years,” Arians said.

“No,” Arians said, laughing. “But it was special. It was very special because he’s so special.”

You know what else Arians thinks is pretty special? The Cardinals’ outlook in 2018. Though they’ve missed the playoffs each of the past two seasons and have a brand new coaching staff led by first-year head coach Steve Wilks, who participated in Saturday’s tournament, Arians said there is much to like about this year’s team.

And yes, he said, that includes the two primary quarterbacks on the roster in oft-injured Sam Bradford, who has started all 16 games in a season only twice in seven NFL seasons, and his backup, Mike Glennon, a castoff from the Buccaneers and Bears.

Kelly is expected to continue his recovery in New York for the next two weeks before returning to Buffalo, his wife, Jill, wrote on Instagram:

The cornerback was entering the final year of a five-year contract worth $35 million, though the team will save $6.5 million in salary cap space by cutting him. Rodgers-Cromartie, 31, has 439 combined tackles and 30 interceptions throughout his 11-season career.

In a salary-cap saving move, the Houston Texans released their all-time leading tackler on Feb. 20. Cutting the linebacker will save the Texans $7.6 million against the salary cap. He finishes his time in Houston with 664 career tackles, 13 1/2 sacks, eight interceptions and nine forced fumbles after having being suspended 10 games last season for his second violation of the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. seahawks_092

Aaron Donald not expected at Rams offseason program

Aggressive player acquisitions landed the Los Angeles Rams in the headlines this offseason, but the future for their top defensive star has kept them there. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, defensive tackle Aaron Donald plans to skip the team’s voluntary offseason program amid growing consternation over his contract.

Barring a new deal, Donald’s contract carries a cap hit of approximately $6.9 million for 2018, according to Over the Cap . That figure ranks sixth on the Rams defense behind Ndamukong Suh ($14.5 million), Lamarcus Joyner (roughly $11.3 million), Michael Brockers ($11 million), Aqib Talib ($11 million) and Mark Barron ($10 million).

Since entering the league in 2014, Donald has never missed a Pro Bowl and has earned first-team All-Pro honors three times. He has recorded 148 tackles and 39 career sacks, twice leading the league in sacks by a defensive tackle.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, who cited unidentified sources, Landry agreed to terms on a five-year contract worth $75.5 million with $47 million guaranteed.

Landry had hoped to get a long-term deal from the Dolphins but instead signed a franchise tag with the team last month before promptly being traded to the Browns, who sent two draft picks to Miami. The deal was for a fourth-round selection in 2018 and a seventh-round selection in 2019.

Landry, 25, had 112 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns last season. He has been named to three Pro Bowls in four NFL seasons and caught more than 100 passes twice without ever catching fewer than 84 in a season.

Assuming Cleveland doesn’t draft Barkley in the first round, it would be a good idea to target either LSU’s Derrius Guice or Georgia’s Sony Michel, both of which would add depth to the backfield of Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson. Cleveland should also target offensive line help in the second round and Notre Dame’s Mike McGlinchey and Pitt’s Brian O’Neill fit that description.seahawks_126
